The 2024 Mazda CX-90 debuts as a brand-new three-row SUV model this year. Explore the main differences between the gas-powered and the plug-in hybrid versions of this impressive vehicle, which can accommodate up to eight people comfortably. Let’s take a look at five Differences Between the 2024 Mazda CX-90 Gas and PHEV Models

1. Powertrain

The gas-powered CX-90 offers two available engines, either a 280-horsepower or 340-horsepower inline-six. Both options come with an eight-speed automatic transmission and standard all-wheel drive. You’ll also get the power of M Hybrid Boost, which gives the gas engine increased power for a limited time at the push of a button. The CX-90 PHEV pairs a four-cylinder engine with an electric motor to provide 323 horses. You can travel up to an EPA-estimated 26 miles on a fully charged battery without using any gas.

2. Towing and Fuel Efficiency

The standard CX-90 can tow up to 5,000 pounds with the right equipment, compared to 3,500 pounds for the PHEV. With the PHEV, you’ll get 25 combined miles per gallon in hybrid mode and the equivalent of 56 combined miles per gallon when operating on electric power alone. The gas version provides 24 city mpg with the base powertrain.

3. Cabin Configurations

The gas model of the CX-90 is available with two rows of captain’s chairs to accommodate six, second-row captain’s chairs and a third-row bench to seat seven, and two rows of bench seats to fit up to eight passengers. The PHEV doesn’t come in a six-seat version. If you choose the third-row captain’s chairs for the CX-90, you’ll get a bit more cargo space. Otherwise, these SUVs share the same amount of room for gear.

4. Trims and Features

The gas CX-90 comes in eight different trims, compared to three models of the PHEV. As a result, the latter has some upgraded standard features, such as second-row sunshades and genuine leather upholstery instead of synthetic leather.

5. Infotainment Tech

The base model of the standard CX-90 pairs a 10.25-inch infotainment touchscreen with a 7-inch digital instrument display, while the PHEV has a 10.25-inch digital info display in addition to the large touchscreen. The PHEV also has six standard USB ports instead of four. Both SUVs feature standard Apple CarPlay and Android Auto and an eight-speaker stereo with HD radio.

Both the gas and hybrid models of the CX-90 earned placement on Car and Driver’s prestigious Editor’s Choice list for 2024. They also received five-star crash test ratings from the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration and Top Safety Pick+ designation from the Insurance Institute for Highway Safety.
